Healthy Home Rescue – Baltimore Healthy Homes Community Benefit Program

Life-saving healthy home interventions powered by the Concairge real-time, performance-based indoor air quality data systems—before symptoms become emergencies.

We are securing $1,000,000 in underwriting support to deliver real-time indoor air quality assessment, monitoring, and mitigation for 100 high-risk Baltimore City homes impacted by radon exposure, asthma triggers, and poor indoor air quality.

This program is proactive, measurable, and prevention-focused—designed to reduce emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and avoidable health crises before they occur.

.

Each home served represents:

  • Fewer asthma attacks

  • Reduced emergency room visits

Why This Matters Now

Preventable indoor air hazards are driving avoidable health crises—today.

Radon is an invisible, odorless gas—and one of the most preventable causes of lung cancer in the United States.

Asthma remains one of the leading causes of preventable emergency room visits in Baltimore City.

When indoor air quality is monitored in real time, health risks can be identified early, symptoms can be managed at home, and costly emergency care can be prevented.

The Indoor Air Quality Crisis

We Spend 90% of Our Lives Indoors

Yet Indoor Air Remains Largely Unregulated. Americans spend up to 90% of our lifetime indoors — and 70% of each day (14-16 hours) is spent inside of our homes, primarily in bedrooms where we sleep, breathe deeply, and recover. Yet up to 70% of our exposure to outdoor air pollution actually occurs indoors, where pollutants concentrate and linger.

In fact:

  • Indoor air can be up to 100 times more polluted than outdoor air

  • Humans spend more time indoors than most whale species spend underwater

  • Outdoor air has been regulated by the EPA since 1970

  • There is no federal indoor air quality policy, standard, law, regulation or mandate to protect families from radon gas or asthma triggers inside of our homes

The result is a silent public health crisis happening where people should feel safest.

If you live in the Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) coverage area, you qualify for a Free 30-Day Healthy Home Check-Up as part of a generous grant award from BGE in partnership with the Forward Women's Leadership Forum and Concairge.com.

Radon: An Invisible, Deadly Threat in Our Homes

We Spend 90% of Our Lives Indoors

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA):

  • Radon kills 58 people every day in the United States

  • Nearly 1 in 4 Maryland homes has radon levels above the EPA action threshold of 4 pCi/L

  • Radon is invisible, odorless, and tasteless — the only way to know is to test for it

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas released from soil and rock. It seeps into buildings and becomes trapped indoors, where prolonged exposure significantly increases the risk of lung cancer.

  • Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers

  • It dramatically increases risk for smokers

  • Research published in Pediatrics shows children exposed to higher radon levels experience more asthma symptoms

January is National Radon Action Month, but radon exposure is a year-round risk.

Asthma: A Preventable Crisis Hitting Baltimore the Hardest

Baltimore Faces One of the Most Severe Asthma Burdens in the Nation

According to the 2025 Asthma Capital Report:

  • Baltimore City has the highest asthma-related death rate in the United States

  • African American women are four times more likely to die from asthma than white men

According to the Abell Foundation:

  • 24,000 Baltimore City children live with asthma

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS):

  • African American children in Maryland are three times more likely to be hospitalized

  • They are six times more likely to die from asthma than white children

According to the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America:

  • The “September Asthma Tsunami” — the third week of September — marks the highest spike nationally in:

    • Missed school days

    • Missed work days

    • Emergency room visits

    • Asthma-related hospitalizations

These outcomes are not inevitable. They are largely preventable.
