Buildings never perform as designed. They are notoriously inefficient and expensive to operate. Buildings are responsible for almost 48% of all Greenhouse Gas Emissions globally and use 55% of the worlds electricity, 30% of energy and water consumed in buildings is wasted.
"The person who manages your building has a greater impact on your health than your doctor." Dr. Joeseph Allen
Indoor Air Corps is a real-time indoor air quality student internship program. We believe in the genius of our interns and fostering the conditions that ensure their success. During this internship, students will be researching and creating student led presentations on their findings for their community and professional organizations to include but not limited to an intern led IAQ Podcast. Interns will engage with a variety of low cost, high-quality, real-time indoor air quality monitors, apps and dashboards. They develop the ability to think deeply and make connections to the wider world through reading, writing, and research, they build comprehension, language, and writing skills. They collaborate with their peers and industry professionals, engage in scientific evidence based research, discussions, and present their ideas in a variety of formats. They set goals and reflect on their learning. They also have the opportunity to present their research at Maryland Climate Tech+ 2026.
Up to 70% of our day is spent inside our homes (14-16 hours,) and the majority of that time is spent in our bedrooms. Up to 70% of our exposure to outdoor air pollutants actually occurs indoors. Humans spend more time indoors than most whale species spend underwater. Indoor air quality is up to 100 times worse than outdoor air quality. Outdoor air quality has been heavily regulated by the EPA since 1970. There is no federal indoor air quality policy, standard, regulation, law, or mandate to eliminate the harmful effects of radon gas and asthma triggers from our homes.
Radon Kills 58-People Per Day! January is National Radon Action Month. Nearly 1 in 4 Maryland homes have elevated radon levels above 4 pCi/L. Radon is invisible and odorless. You cannot see, smell, or taste it, so you need to test for it. Radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive, colorless gas that forms from the breakdown of uranium in rocks, soil, and water, which can seep into buildings and become trapped, posing a significant health risk, primarily lung cancer, if inhaled at high levels over time, making home testing crucial. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers, and significantly increases risk for smokers. According to the journal Pediatrics children with higher radon exposure have more asthma symptoms. If you live in the Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) coverage area, you qualify for a Free 30-Day Healthy Home Check-Up as part of a generous grant award from BGE in partnership with the Forward Women's Leadership Forum and Concairge.com.
